Congratulations to coach Dick Ueoka for being designated the grand marshal of the 75th Rotary Track Meet that was held Thursday at Vidinha Stadium in Lihu‘e, and to the Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i for doing the honor.
Coach Dave Walker was thrilled that coach Ueoka was able to attend and enjoy part of the track and field games in person. Kaua‘i High School coach Jaime Jimenez welcomed the extra hands that helped run the qualifying meet, as did the other volunteers who contribute to making the meet happen, and it’s definitely a treat to see those faces who “retired.”
And there’s still time (hopefully) to get some of those seedlings from Carmila Udarbe (coach Basilio “Bunga” Fuertes said she had a basketball game Saturday so had to move the seedlings distribution to today!).
Coach Bunga and Roy Miyashiro will be joined by Carmila’s brother Anthony Udarbe, who is an eighth-grader at Waimea Canyon Middle School who is trying to raise funds for his Washington DC trip.
Is the basketball game Carmila playing in part of the county’s youth basketball program that kicked off Saturday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center? Coach Clyde Vito said Mayor Derek Kawakami was expected to do referee honors by doing the first ball, and Kaleo Carvalho wasn’t sure he could make it since he’s participating in the Hapalua Half Marathon (Kapa‘a High School trainer Chris Ang said he’s planning on doing this event, too) in Honolulu.
And, now, how come Bev Brody never mentioned Wednesday was National Walking Day?
