MANA — Lacin Montemayor, driving his ‘87 Chevy S10, took the Muscle V8 class when Alma Koetje red lighted at the April 2 drag races hosted by the Garden Isle Racing Association at the Kaua‘i Raceway Park in Mana.
Koetje’s young one, Sophia Koetje relinquished the Jr. Dragster class to veteran racer Ryant Sakamoto, topping the GIRA points listing with 515 points in 2021, who piloted his 2014 Jr. Dragster to reach the 1/8-mile courst in eight seconds, reaching 81.13 mph on a 7.90 dial-in.
Brothers Jason Barros bettered his brother Bobby Barros for top honors in the Pro ET class by just .04 second when Jason’s Camaro tripped the light on his 11.10 ET over Bobby’s 11.14 ET down the quarter-mile.
Calvin Costa, winning the GIRA season opener in March, picked up his second straight win in the Top Gun class when his ‘00 Roadster topped the 147 mph mark in 8.62 seconds.
With the COVID-19 restrictions, mandates, and health and safety rules being relaxed due to lowered case counts, the GIRA announces that the drag races that opened on March 12, is now open to spectators.
Drag races at the Kaua‘i Raceway Park in Mana are limited to day races until further notice by the GIRA, and there are races scheduled for the first Saturday of each month except for November when drag races move to Nov. 12.
