LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School tennis program took its series over Island School at the Po‘ipu Kai tennis courts, and Kapa‘a High School split its series against Waimea High School during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis series.
At the Kapa‘a High School courts, the Warrior men were 5-0 winners over the Menehune before dropping 2-3 to the Waimea girls.
“We survived some early rains,” said Kapa‘a coach Richard Wanek. “But our new courts are a pleasure to play on, and dry fast and easy.”
Kapa‘a’s Thomas Capelli took the boys first singles, 6-1, 6-0 over Waimea’s Benedict Uri, and in boys second singles court, Nick Uribe worked hard to defeat Waimea’s Rhaziah Tacub-Taniguchi, 6-4, 6-3.
In boys first doubles, the Warrior duo of Rego Uribe and Chase Capelli were 6-2, 6-0 winners over the Menehune pair of Richard Palacio and Mar Ruiz.
Warrior Jason Muramaru paired with John Dumaoal to shut down the Menehune duo of Jayce Foster and Aaron Ragus, 6-0, 6-0 in boys second doubles.
Waimea defaulted the boys third doubles match to Kapa’a’s Daniel Simpson and Rico Natalio.
Waimea’s Kamalani Goo shut down Kapa‘a’s Parker Reed, 6-0, 6-0 in girls first singles before Kapa‘a’s Toni Umalla redeemed that opening loss by downing Waimea’s Erich Borbos, 6-0, 6-2.
Kapa‘a kept the momentum going with a win in girls first doubles, when the Lady Warrior duo of Chloe and Rain Hannsz dropped just two games in their win over Waimea’s Victoria Mendoza and Kieran Canaran, 6-2, 6-0.
The Warriors dropped the girls second doubles match to Waimea when Menehune Kathleen Alvarez teamed with Macie-Lynn Ramos to down the Lady Warrior pair of Finley Geis and Ocean Amador.
Waimea picked up their edge in girls third doubles court when the Menehune pair of Kaye Alvarez and Charmain Acoba edged out Kapa‘a’s Ke‘ahilani Bacon and Sage Seller, 7-6(4) before sealing the match with a 6-0 set.
Over at the Po‘ipu Bay tennis courts, the Red Raiders came out with a 5-0 win on the girls arena, and the Red Raider boys came off the courts with a 3-2 edge over Island School.
Voyager Michael Fitzgerald shut down Kaua‘i’s Cameron Teves, 6-0, 6-0 in boys first singles floor before bother Mark Fitzgerald defeated Kaua‘i’s Tanner Hubbard, 6-1, 6-2 in boys second singles arena.
The Red Raiders came back to take all three doubles matches, starting with the boys first doubles, when Dillon Fulks paired with Matt Rivera to defeat Voyagers Reed Brown and Ramana Wills, 6-1, 6-3.
In boys second doubles, Kaua‘i’s duo of Joe Puplava and Issac Mirey shut down Voyagers Jacob Brosamer and Ryan Biederman, 6-0, 6-0. The Kaua‘i pair of Gian Panoy and Troy Diaz got past the Island School team of Gabriel Kelley and Bodhi Czarske, 6-1, 6-1 to complete the doubles sweep.
Moving to the girls’ arena, Kaua‘i’s girls third doubles team of Kate Nakamura and Jeanine Longboy took three sets to defeat the Voyager duo of Maya Ventura and Zooey Johnson, 1-6, 7-5 and 10-5.
Kaua‘i’s Kirra Carvalho defeated Island School’s Ava Anderton, 6-0, 6-0 in girls first singles, and Red Raider Grace Aguilera dropped just four games in her win over Island School’s Samantha Brown, 6-0, 6-4, in girls second singles.
Moving to the doubles arena, Kaua‘i High School sisters Maddison and Savannah Hubbard controlled the girls first doubles with a win over Island School, 6-3, 6-3, and Kaua‘i’s girls second doubles duo of Marley Marty and Zoe Carvalho were 6-3, 6-3 winners over the Voyager pair of Madi Welsh and Lilah Hamid.
KIF matches continue Saturday when Kaua‘i High School travels to the Waimea High School tennis courts starting at 9 a.m.
Kapa‘a High School will match up against Island School at the Po‘ipu Kai tennis courts, starting at noon.
