HANAMA‘ULU — Ledward Ka‘apana knows what folks like, and he can deliver.
He performs Monday with bassist Jesse Gregorio from 5 to 8:30 p.m., at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort near Hanama‘ulu, during the next installment of the long-running E Kanikapila Kakou (Let’s Play Music).
Folks who come early can bring instruments and voices and learn a song that they will perform later that evening.
Ka‘apana grew up in a musical family in Kalapana, Hawai‘i Island, where, he says, there were few distractions. There was no electricity, so no TV, and not much radio. Residents were left to entertain themselves.
Music was the gift that resulted in a life of travel and premiere awards for him. He is a recipient of the 2011 National Heritage Fellowship awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts — the U.S. government’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts.
He is one of the very few recording artists who has received Na Hoku Hanohano Awards that are Hawai‘i’s equivalent of the American Grammy Awards, for his work as a member of three different recording entities — as a solo artist, as a member of Ledward Ka‘apana &I Kona, and as a member of Hui ‘Ohana.
As of 2010, four of his solo albums received Grammy nominations in the Best Hawaiian Musical Album category, and he’s won twice on slack-key guitar compilations.
