LIHU‘E — Just two points separated the Waimea High boys and Kapa‘a High boys track and field teams last week when the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation held its first meet at Vidinha Stadium.
Following the presentation of the full array of track and field events, the Waimea boys finished with 124 points over Kapa‘a’s 122 points. The Kaua‘i High boys finished with 96 points, and the Island School boys rounded out the scoreboard with 89 points.
The Island School girls piled up 150 points, and the Kaua‘i High girls picked up 145 points. The Lady Warriors finished with 74 points, and Waimea High School girls rounded out the scoreboard with 59 points.
Menehune sprinter Joey Sams rumbled off the start in the boys 110-meter hurdles, and rolled to the finish in first with a run of 17.98 seconds, as Kapa‘a’s Kala Velasco finished in 18.11.
In the 20-runner boys 100 dash, Waimea’s Lindcey Constantino was first in 12.03 seconds, just .02 seconds better than Island School’s Cody Manibog. Kaua‘i High’s Nakoa Andrade filled in the third spot on a 12.26 run. Constantino continued on to win the boys 400 dash in 1:00.18, two seconds ahead of Sams (1:02.28).
Sams went on to nudge Jaiden Sams to take the boys 200 dash on a 24.27 run over Jaiden’s 25.21 run.
During the distance runs, Kaua‘i High’s Brennen Corregedore overtook Island School’s Avinash Srikanth in the final lap to pull ahead and trip the clocks on a 4:49.01 run over Srikanth’s 4:52.43.
Corregedore went on to capture the boys 3000 run with a time of 10:53.66, nearly two minutes ahead of Island School’s Bradley Pratt, who stopped the clocks at 12:01.99.
Kapa‘a’s Kanoe Haneberg topped the girls long jump on a leap of 14 feet, 9 inches, following her first finish in the 100 hurdles, where she tripped the clock at 19.40.
Island School’s Ella Offley topped the 15-runner 100 dash on a 13.38 run over team mate Liliana DeSouza’s 13.72. She came back to win the 200 dash on a 29.04 run over DeSouza’s 29.43 effort.
Kaua‘i High’s Emma Burgess topped the girls 1,500 run with a time of 5:21.25, shadowed by teammate Kamaira Silva at 5:37.55. Burgess went on to top the 800 run on a 2:41.14 showing, followed by Silva at 2:43.76. She rounded the night with a first finish in the 3,000 run on a 12:11.93, again chased by Silva, who stopped the clocks at 13:12.36.
The next KIF meet takes place Thursday, with the first events starting at 4:30 p.m.
