WAIMEA — The Waimea High School softball team took a 14-4 win over Kaua‘i High School, Wednesday night at the Waimea Canyon Park during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation softball game.
According to KIF scorekeeper Michael Koerte, the Menehune victory puts pressure on the Lady Warriors to take the next double-header, Saturday when Kapa‘a visits Isenberg Park to face Kaua‘i High School.
“The scenario is if Kapa‘a sweeps the doubleheader, Saturday, there will be a first round playoff between Kapa‘a and Waimea,” Koerte said. “That playoff game will take place either Monday, or Tuesday.”
Waimea claimed its 10-run ruling victory behind its bats that churned out 11 hits for its 14 runs. Ryleah Torres led the Menehune sticks with a second-inning 2-run homer with two away. Kayla Prigge, finishing with two hits — a triple and a single — drove three runners across the plate.
Other Menehune batters marking RBI in the victory included Nia Pablo with an RBI single in the third inning, Kalea Huihui-Caberto getting an RBI-double in the third, Sianni Sakai smacking an RBI double in the opening frame, and Kasey Carveiro pushing a runner home with her fifth inning RBI single.
Red Raider hitters were led by pitcher Kaelynn Keale who marked an RBI double in the fourth inning where Kaua‘i scored three of its four runs. Keale also singled in the first inning and scored on a wild pitch.
Other Raiders whose bats found the ball included Mia Marty, and Jei Li Rosare-Yadao.
Keale suffered the loss on the mound, allowing 11 Menehune hits, seven Earned Runs, while striking out two and walking seven batters.
Leici-Mae Camara picked up the win for the Menehune with four runs allowed, just a single one Earned, on four hits. She struck out four Raider batters while walking one.
Kaua‘i High School next hosts Kapa‘a High School in a doubleheader, Saturday at Isenberg Park. The first pitch goes off starting at 10 a.m., the second contest following a 30-minute break at the end of the first game.
