KAPA‘A — Host Kapa‘a High and Waimea High softball programs split their double-header Saturday during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation softball games contested at the Kapa‘a High School field.
According to stats and scores from ScoringLive.com, Waimea took the opener, 8-0, before dropping to the host Lady Warriors 4-1 in the nightcap.
Menehune pitcher Taelor Camelo threw a one-hitter, going seven innings, with just one hit given up to Kapa‘a hurler Seija Makanani and striking out two Warrior hitters while walking three.
Makanani, in that opening game, gave up eight runs, four being earned runs on six hits while striking out seven Menehune hitters and walking four.
Ryleah Torres topped the Menehune hitting with two hits, including a double, scored twice, and had an RBI. Menehune shortstop Sianni Sakai scored three times and had three RBI on her shot. Nia Pablo scored once and drove in a run with her hit.
During the second contest, Kapa‘a struck first with three runs in the second inning, answered by a single Menehune score in the fourth in the 4-1 Kapa‘a win.
The Warriors and Menehune tied in the number of hits at five each, with Kapa‘a having the edge with a pair of two-baggers, one by Kala Davis-Caberto, who scored once, and the other from Kailee Gorospe, who notched an RBI with her double.
Savanna Simons, who picked up home runs in the Warriors’ first two outings, scored once and had an RBI. Kai-Lee Kupihea scored once and had a hit, along with Tira Ann Kaui. Makanani also notched a hit.
On the mound, Makanani gave up one run on five hits with three Menehune walking and six striking out.
Kayla Prigge drove in the sole Menehune run on her hit, and Sakai scored the run with two hits on the day. Kaelyn Banquel finished with two hits for Waimea.
Camelo went the distance for the loss, giving up four runs, three being earned, on five hits, while striking out two Warrior hitters and walking two.
Waimea will next host Kaua‘i High Wednesday with a single contest at Waimea Athletic Field, starting at 6 p.m.
On the baseball diamonds, Waimea split its series with Kaua‘i High, winning the first game 5-3 and losing the nightcap 8-0, at Vidinha Stadium.
Island School went to the Ron Martin Field Saturday, where host Kapa‘a High took both ends of their double-header, 12-1 and 4-3.
No details were available at press time.
Kaua‘i High next travels to Kapa‘a Saturday for a double-header starting at 10 a.m., with the second contest starting following a 30-minute break at the conclusion of the first game.
Island School hosts Waimea at Vidinha Stadium field starting at 3 p.m., with the second contest starting following a 30-minute break at the end of the first contest.
