LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School fans did not expect the outcome of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys volleyball games on Tuesday night.
“Looks like Island School is going to win three,” said a Kaua‘i High School Junior Varsity player who peeked through the door of the gym to see what was taking place on their home court. “We lost our three sets, too. But this is just the first game. We’re going to improve.”
Island School, with its contingent of loud, cheering fans, took both ends of their contest with Kaua‘i High School, winning the JV series 25-16, 26-24 and 25-23. The varsity Voyagers took their end of the series on wins of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-14.
Results of the contest between Waimea hosting Kapa‘a were not available at press time.
Voyager fans had a lot to cheer about when Josh Dobashi, one of five seniors on their roster, led the blue-shirted crew to solid wins over the Red Raiders, who could not find answers to Dobashi’s powerful hitting and solid defensive play at the net.
The Raiders started even with Island School, and stayed close until mid-game, when the Voyager rotation moved Dobashi, a carry-over from the recent boys basketball team, into place as the outside hitter. From that point, the Raiders, getting solid play punctuations from Cade Myers, Noah Louis, Ernesto Alcones and the unique setting style of Hans Leo Carlos, could not find answers to the hard-hitting Voyager frontal lineup.
Island School next hosts Kapa‘a at the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus in Puhi, with the JV contest starting at 5 p.m. and the varsity contest following, but not starting ahead of 6:30 p.m.
Pearl City High School’s boys squads are on the island to play exhibition games against all four KIF member schools.
Kaua‘i High will host Waimea High on Saturday, the JV game starting at 5 p.m. and the varsity game to follow not earlier than 6:30 p.m.
Pearl City High School will start their series tonight with a game at Waimea High School, with the JV contest starting at 5 p.m. at the Clem Gomes Gym.
Friday night, Pearl City moves to the Kaua‘i High School gym for a match against the Red Raiders, the JV contest serving up from 5 p.m.
Saturday is a double-header for the Pearl City team starting at 9 a.m. at the Bernice Hundley Gym against Kapa‘a. Pearl City moves to the Wilcox Gymnasium for a match against Island School starting at 5 p.m. for the JV contest.
