LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School tennis teams were winners in both the girls and boys matches against Waimea High School, and at the Kapa‘a High School tennis courts the Warrior boys tied with Island School, 2-2, and Island School girls edged the Lady Warriors, 3-2.
On the Warriors’ home courts, Island School’s Michael Fitzgerald defeated Kapa‘a’s Thomas Capelli, 6-1, 6-0, in first singles action.
Mark Fitzgerald continued the Voyagers’ winning streak by taking the second singles match over Nick Uribe, 6-0, 6-0.
Kapa‘a’s first taste of victory came in boys doubles, when the team of Rego Uribe and Chase Capelli defeated the Voyager pair of Travis Calico and Ryand Biederman, 6-0, 6-0.
Island School forfeited its second doubles match to Kapa‘a, and according to Kapa‘a coach Richard Wanek, the third doubles match was a scratch.
The Kapa‘a girls’ wins started in second singles when Parker Reed got past Island School’s Samantha Brown, 6-2, 6-4, following an earlier defeat in first singles, where Island School’s Ava Anderton handed Rain Hannsz a 6-4, 6-3 loss.
In first doubles, Island School’s duo of Maya Ventura and Katie Brown edged out Kapa‘a’s Ocean Amador and Finley Geis, 7-6, 6-3.
Kapa‘a’s sSecond doubles team of Toni Umalla and Ke‘ahilani Bacon put up a good fight before dropping to the Island School duo of Zooey Johnson and Lilah Hamid in a tiebreaker, 6-2, 1-6 and 7-10.
The girls third doubles match belonged to Kapa‘a’s Wainehia Kitamura and Kailee Baltazar over Island School’s Fuko Shindo and Ashley Chun, 6-1, 6-3.
Over at the Waimea High School tennis courts where activity competed with the ongoing Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation baseball game taking place at Cook Field, Kaua‘i High picked up a 4-1 win on the girls courts, and the Red Raider men swept the Menehune, 5-0.
Kaua‘i’s sole loss of the day took place in girls first singles, where Waimea’s Kamalani Goo got the better of Grace Aguilera, 6-2, 6-2. Kirra Carvalho came back to redeem the blemish in second singles when she shut down Waimea’s Erick Barbos, 6-0, 6-0.
Kaua‘i’s first doubles team of Marley Marty and Zoe Carvalho defeated Waimea’s pair of Victoria Mendoza and Kieran Canavan, 6-0, 6-0, and the second doubles team of Savannah Hubbard and Maddison Hubbard dropped just one game in its win over the Waimea pair of Macie-Lynn Ramos and Jashley Guillermo, 6-1, 6-0.
In girls third doubles play, Red Raiders Kate Nakamura and Jeanine Longboy worked to defeat Waimea’s sisters pair of Kathleen-Caire Alvarez and Kaye Alvarez, 6-2, 6-2.
On the boys’ arena, Dillon Fulks dropped just one game to Waimea’s Mar Ruiz in the 6-0, 6-1 Red Raider victory.
According to Kaua‘i coach Shannon Burkman, Waimea defaulted to Cameron Teves in the boys second singles before the boys’ doubles teams took all of their matches for the 5-0 win.
Tanner Hubbard paired with Judah Sapp in first doubles to defeat the Waimea duo of Richard Palacio and Peyton Siliado, 6-1, 6-0, and in second doubles, Kaua‘i’s Matthew Rivera and Joe Puplava handed Waimea’s Benedict Uri and Rhaziah Tacub-Taniguchi a 6-0, 6-0 defeat.
Kaua‘i wrapped up the day with a solid win in third doubles when Isaac Mirey and Cody Torres were 6-0, 6-0 winners over the Waimea duo of Jayce Foster and Aaron Ragus.
Due to the spring break, there are no matches this week.
The next tennis meeting will take place on Saturday, March 26, when Kaua‘i hosts Kapa‘a at the Poipu Kai tennis courts starting at noon. Island School will travel to the Waimea High School courts on the same date to face the Menehune teams starting at 9 a.m.
