WAILUA HOMESTEADS — Police and fire personnel pulled a 70-year-old Wailua woman from her car Monday afternoon after the vehicle had overturned into the Kalama Stream.
The woman, the only occupant in the 2013 Honda Accord, was transported to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, and later transferred to Wilcox Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition, according to the Kaua‘i Police Department.
According to a preliminary report, a vehicle was found overturned in the stream north of Wailua Homesteads Park around 1:45 p.m. The Honda was heading north on Kamalu Road when the woman lost control and struck the right side of the bridge before overturning into the stream, where it was largely submerged. The woman was extricated by responding police and fire personnel.
“This isn’t the first time a car went off there,” said a property owner near the scene of the accident, who reported that a similar incident occurred 10 years ago. The guardrails had previously been knocked into the water by another accident, the resident said.
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, according to a police report.
