PO‘IPU — Following a more-than-two-year break from the tennis courts, the Kaua‘i High School boys and girls tennis teams roared back to take both ends of their matches against Island School Saturday at the Po‘ipu Kai tennis courts.
“It was great to see all the kids playing matches again after almost two years,” said Kaua‘i High School tennis coach Shannon Burkman.
“We are very proud of their efforts and hard work during practice. In addition to tennis skill fundamentals, we have been emphasizing the importance of strong mindsets throughout their matches, and in life.”
The Red Raider girls teams and the boys teams each took their contests 5-0 over the Voyager teams.
Grace Aguilera got past Voyager Ava Anderston, 6-1, 6-2 in first singles, and in second singles, Kirra Carvalho was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Island School’s Samantha Brown.
In doubles, Marley Marty teamed with Zoe Carvalho to rise over the Voyager duo of Mackey and Madi Welsh, 6-0, 6-0.
Savannah Hubbard paired with Maddison Hubbard to defeat the Island School pair of Katie Brown and Maya Ventura, 6-0, 6-1 in second doubles court.
In third doubles, Kate Nakamura paired with Jeanine Longboy to defeat Island School’s Zooey Johnson and Roxy Wang, 6-1 6-2.
The Red Raider boys were similarly strong, taking all of their matches against Island School, and giving up just one set during doubles play.
Cameron Teves downed Island School’s Reed Brown, 6-4, 6-2 in first singles, and Red Raider Judah Sapp defeated Voyager Ramana Wills, 6-4, 6-1, in second singles.
In doubles, Troy Diaz teamed with Isaac Mirey to get past Island School’s pair of Gabriel Kelley and Jannik Evanoff, 6-1, 6-0, in third doubles.
The remaining two doubles matches were strongly in favor of Kaua‘i, when the first doubles team of Dillon Fulks and Tanner Hubbard blitzed the Voyager duo of Jacob Brosamer and Bodhi Czarske, 6-0, 6-0.
Matthew Rivera teamed with Joe Puplava in second doubles to defeat Island School’s Ryan Bieerman and Travis Calico, 6-0, 6-0.
No results were available from the matches between Kapa‘a High at Waimea High.
Kaua‘i High travels to the Waimea High School courts Saturday, while Island School will visit the Kapa‘a High School courts. The first matches serve up starting at 9 a.m. at both sites.
