LIHU‘E — The Mokihana Club of Kaua‘i, through its Nursing Scholarship Chair Becky Fries, announced the presentation of $12,000 to Kaua‘i Community College first- and second-year students in the nursing program.
The recipients for the 2021-22 Nursing Scholarships are Lewelyn Agpaoa, Shelby Banach, Melinda Belmodis, Joelie Claro, Oriana Dias, Harlee Fujimoto, Michelle Galan, Mary Hall, Hayden Igne, Tiareh Martin, Kelsie Norton, Ashley Posada, Ma Suerte Rebucal, Deva Siblerud and Sage Watanabe.
In 2003, The Mokihana Club recognized a critical nationwide shortage of nurses and established a scholarship in partnership with the KCC nursing program. Since its inception, The Mokihana Club has provided approximately $124,000 in scholarships awarded to students pursuing nursing careers.
The shortage of nurses continues today, as nurses are being challenged by the demands from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Health care has been a priority for The Mokihana Club, Kaua‘i’s longest-running women’s organization, since 1905, when the club’s founders, Elsie and Mabel Wilcox, were public-health advocates and instrumental in bringing dental and general health care to the island’s school children.
The Mokihana Club also announced a fundraising concert on May 7 to benefit the club’s nursing scholarships. The concert will feature Keola Beamer, Jeff Peterson and Moanalani Beamer. Details on ticket sales will be announced soon.
