HONOLULU — Punahou Schools set the pace for the finals of the 2022 Hawaiian Airlines Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association canoe paddling championships the unfolded at Ke‘ehi Lagoons, Saturday on O‘ahu.
Punahou teams swept the major divisions, taking the varsity boys, varsity girls, and varsity mixed division on strong showings. Punahou boys finished the course on a pace-setting 3 minutes, 34.56 seconds in the finals, with the Island School boys, taking its first Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation title in 2022, being edged out of the top eight despite a strong 3:53.45 run during the semifinals.
Punahou girls set the field in the finals with a 4:13.79 showing, nearly five seconds faster than the runner-up Mid Pacific Institute crew that crossed the line at 4:18.37. The Kaua‘i High School girls team finished the finals in seventh place on a 4:26.55 run, just about a second back of sixth-place Kalaheo High School (4:26.55), and more than 25 ticks ahead of the Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy team.
The Punahou mixed team set the bar at 3:44.22 for that division, nearly six ticks ahead of runner-up Seabury Hall (3:50.94). Kaua‘i’s entry to the division, Island School, just made the cut for the top eight with a 4:10.21 showing, nearly eight seconds behind seventh-place-finisher Kea‘au High School.
