LIHU‘E — On Friday, members of the state Legislature displayed their support for Ukraine by collectively wearing blue and/or yellow, representing the Ukrainian flag.
The demonstration was organized by both Senate and House members in an effort to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
The state House also passed two resolutions condemning the invasion of Ukraine and urging swift and severe economic sanctions on the Russian Federation.
“It is heartbreaking and a travesty to see the attacks on the Ukrainian people, including the effects on civilian woman and children,” state Rep. James Tokioka said. “It was promising to hear that companies in Hawai‘i are taking a stand against Russian imported products. We can all do our part in also not purchasing Russian imported products, such as vodkas, amongst various other products.
Senate President Ronald D. Kouchi also expressed his support for the Ukrainian people, and is looking forward to considering the House Resolution when it crosses over to the Senate.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is an appalling display of aggression and a clear breach of Ukraine’s sovereignty,” Kouchi said.
“We express our aloha for all those being affected by this conflict and look forward to considering this resolution.”
