PUHI — Three Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation swimming records fell Saturday during the KIF championships at the YMCA pool.
Island School sophomore Chloe Inouye — in addition to breaking two of the three KIF records — led the Voyager women to the event’s top finish with 82 points. Kaua‘i High followed with 24 points, and Kapa‘a High girls pulled in 14 points.
Kaua‘i High junior Jacob Rich broke the third KIF record and led the Red Raider boys team to first place, with 96 points, ahead of Kapa‘a High that finished with 69 points. The Island School men rounded out the leaderboard with 13 points.
Inouye, in addition to being part of the 15 qualifying swims coming out of the meet, broke records in the girls 100-yard freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. The swimmer not only broke records in the 100 freestyle event, she bettered her seeded time of 54.16 seconds when she touched the wall at 53.42, bettering the previous record 53.96 set by Yasmine Ware in 2011.
Inouye also touched the wall at 1:05.34 in the 100 breaststroke finals, bettering the previous 1:08.68 KIF record set by Ware in 2012 and surpassing her event KIF record pace of 1:05.59 set earlier this season.
Rich, swimming the opening leg of the boys 200 medley relay team, stopped the clocks at 57.93 in the finals of the 100 backstroke, besting the 2006 record set by Jared Perry at 57.95.
Additionally, the graduating seniors from each participating high school were recognized via the live streaming of the event. These included Kai Mottley, Kailash Letman, Isabella Parsons and Sol Trevino from Kaua‘i High School, and Katy Hoesel, Brandon Chang and Tyler Tanaka from Kapa‘a High School.
Under health and safety rulings, no spectators were allowed into the pool facility for these events.
The qualifying swimmers from the KIF will next take the water at the M. Mark Takai Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association swimming and diving championships on March 4 and 5, hosted by Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i on Haawai‘i Island.
Due to site and space restrictions, fans are not permitted at the state meet.
