LIHU‘E — By lunchtime Friday, more than three shipping containers of material had been processed by The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center team at the Kaua‘i Resource Center, adjacent to the Lihu‘e Refuse Transfer Station and the Reynold’s HI5 recycling center.
“This is a lot of material that is not going to the landfill,” said Shantelle Rego, a project manager with the Kaua‘i Solid Waste Division. “Two of the containers already left. This one was just finished packing.”
A steady stream of cars with items for the ARC donation event flowed through the Kaua‘i Resource Center, only pausing for the ARC team to offload the material.
“We also had more than seven truckloads — the box trucks — that we worked through on Thursday,” said David Chung of the ARC team. “Thursday, we were at The Salvation Army Hanapepe Corps, the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity, the Hanapepe United Church of Christ before moving to Kilauea, Hanamaulu, and The Salvation Army Lihu‘e Corps.”
A lot of the items picked up by the ARC team included overflow items to the groups’ thrift store operations.
The county, in announcing the next monthly donation event, outlined some of the guidelines to make it easier for motorists to the Kaua‘i Resource Center, including encouraging the public to check with local thrift stores to see if they can take contributions before bringing the items to the Kaua‘i Resource Center.
Rego said the next Salvation Army ARC monthly donation event will take place March 25 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Kaua‘i Resource Center.
Residents, businesses, and other organizations can bring in unwanted or unneeded items for reuse. This includes clothing, small furniture, children’s toys, books, and shoes.
Contributors are reminded to check items before bringing them in bags or boxes. Once an item is donated, it cannot be returned.
The ARC also offers pick-up services to thrift stores and businesses. Please call 808-241-4336 to schedule new service.
