LIHU‘E — A Hanalei man turned himself in Tuesday on charges of promoting a dangerous drug, according to a Kaua‘i Police Department record.
Edward Kaumakahia Kauo, 51, was indicted by a grand jury on Jan. 12, on four charges related to drug distribution.
The indictment claims that on Sept. 15, 2021, Kauo was in possession of more than one ounce of methamphetamine, more than one eighth an ounce of heroin and more than 25 units — capsules, tablets, ampules, dosage units, or syrettes — of fentanyl. This resulted in a charge of promoting a dangerous drug in the first degree, two charges of promoting a dangerous drug in the second degree, and one charge of promoting a dangerous drug in the third degree.
The degree of a drug charge is determined based on the amount of a drug found in a defendant’s possession.
Kauo’s bail was set at $100,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned on March 1 in the Fifth Circuit Court.
