LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School Junior Varsity player Brian Brown had the biggest bucket of the night Tuesday during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys basketball games contested at both the Kaua‘i High School gym and the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus.
With the game clock ticking less than a second in overtime, Brown dropped his bomb to surge the JV Kaua‘i boys to a 49-47 edge over the JV Kapa‘a boys who rallied in the final minute of regulation play to force the overtime.
Brown finished the night with 13 points, including the final second game-winning bucket, to lead the JV Red Raiders in the win. Reese Jenkins added 11 points, and Josh Rego finished with seven marks, including a long-distance ball.
Reimel Camacho, whose final period six points were a strong factor in forcing overtime, finished with a game-high of 22 points after scoring Kapa‘a five overtime points. Tristen Scully and Ty Kamoku each chipped in seven points apiece, and Kaiko Kamakaole added six points.
That was just one of four contests being waged in KIF boys basketball.
On the varsity courts, Kapa‘a Warriors poured on the heat in the opening frame to finish with a nine-point margin that only grew through the remaining contest, finishing with a 20-point margin at the final buzzer.
The Warriors finished with a 55-35 win behind 14 points from Keaka Kauhane, including an opening stanza trey that helped widen the gap against Kaua‘i.
Kala Rall poured in his 10-point contribution from the second quarter, including a trey in both the first and second halves. Mikey Questin and Epoki Tafea, getting hardened from his Saturday outing, each poured in eight points to lead the victory.
Issac Mirey and Mikey Manera led the Kaua‘i offense with 11 and six points, respectively. Hekili Dizol, creating a strong impression under the boards, finished with six points, and Carlos Hans Leo added five fourth-quarter points, including a three-ball.
Over at the Wilcox Gymnasium, the hosting Voyagers split its series with the Menehune, the JV Voyagers taking a 46-35 win over the Waimea JV boys, and the Menehune redeeming that loss with a 55-35 win over the varsity Voyagers.
The JV Voyagers surged to a 13-3 first quarter behind treys from Michael Fitzgerald and Orion Magaoay, and never slowed down. Kapono Sullivan joined the scoring action in the second quarter to pile up eight of the Voyagers’ 12 points. Sullivan finished with high point honors with 12 points.
Kahi Apao lent 11 points to the Island School win, and Aiden Alvarez ended with nine points, including a three-ball in the third quarter.
Jeydon Moises topped the Menehune effort with nine points, a trio of three-balls, and Rhenz Punzalan added six points with My Kah Brun finishing with five fourth-quarter marks.
Kelani Lewis topped the varsity Menehune win with 13 points, including a pair of treys, and Lindcey Constantino finished with 11 points. Maka Shigematsu rounded out the leaderboard with 10 second-half points.
Dylan Date topped the Voyager effort with eight points, and Reid Brown, Josh Dobashi, and Cameron Lee each marked seven points.
The next KIF boys basketball series tips off Saturday when the Warriors travel to the Clem Gomes Gym for a meeting with the Menehune. Island School will travel to the Kaua‘i High School gym for their encounter with the Red Raiders. Tip off at both sites is at 5:30 p.m. for the JV game with the varsity contest starting 20 minutes following the completion of the JV games.
