WAIMEA — More wrestlers qualified for more weight classes as the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation hosted its second tournament of the season at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea on Saturday.
In the girls division, the addition of the 168-pound class saw changes that included the addition of new wrestlers, including Meleana Rita of Kaua‘i High, who took the new weight class over Skyelynn Ripley, one of the tough Lady Menehune girls basketball players.
Ambrie Rocha of Kaua‘i entered the fray in the 112-pound class, pushing Casey Bernabe of Kapa‘a, the weight division winner from last week, down a notch to the runner-up position in the division.
In the boys division, Kaua‘i High’s Walker Turpin picked up his second weight-class win in the boys 220-pound class, and Kapa‘a’s Nathan Marovish also picked up his second win, but this week in a different weight class.
Marovish topped the 195-pound class last week, and this week was the top finisher in the boys 170-pound class.
Other weight classes added during the Saturday tournament include the 126-pound class that was taken by Jayden Manibog of Kaua‘i High over Orien Hodges of Kapa‘a.
Deandrei Gonzales of Waimea took the 138-pounds class over Conner Raybuck of Kapa‘a in a new weight division, and Jayden Tumbaga of Waimea was a new face in the 152-pound class, who went on to best last week’s winners.
Little change resulted in the 195-pound class, where Eliam Ornellas of Waimea moved up to the top position in the weight class following Marovish’s migration to the 170-pound class.
Wrestling continues Saturday with the first bouts going off starting at 10 a.m. at the Bernice Hundley Gym on the Kapa‘a High campus.
