KAPA‘A — Kapa‘a High’s boys basketball teams held off the Island School programs, and Waimea High was four points better than Kaua‘i High in varsity play during Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation games Saturday night.
Kapa‘a coach Kamahalo Kauhane mixed his scoring by having Keaka Kauhane getting the touches to the net, and added liberal doses of treys to stay ahead of Island School’s tough defense at the Bernice Hundley Gym at Kapa‘a High. The Warriors won, 53-36.
Keaka Kauhane finished with Warrior high-point honors with 27 points, including five connections outside the three-point arc, and a nearly perfect four-for-five showing at the foul line. He was followed by Epoki Tafea and Kala Rall each dropping nine marks in the win.
Joshua Dobashi topped the Voyager scoring on 11 points, followed by Reid Brown banking nine points. Braden Viohl added five third-quarter marks, and Eiven Erickson finished with four points.
In the junior varsity contest, Kapa‘a trailed the Voyagers by a digit at the half, 14-13, and following point exchanges in the second half, the JV Warriors pulled ahead in the final two minutes of the game, ending with a 33-26 edge behing eight points being posted by Reimel Camacho, including a three ball in the final quarter. Austin Green pulled out a trey in the final stanza toward his five-point showing, and Ty Kamoku contributed seven points to the JV Warrior win.
Kapono Sullivan of the JV Voyagers topped all scorers with 11 marks, followed by Aiden Alvarez adding eight points in the effort.
Over at the Clem Gomes Gym at Waimea High, Kaua‘i High lost an eight-point halftime lead as Waimea came back to outgun the Raiders, 29-17, en route to its eventual 50-46 win.
Menehune Tresten Shigematsu, the high-point boy, led that second-half comeback with a dozen points towards his game-total 21 points that included seven points from his 11 attempts at the free-throw line.
Raindell Fernandez and Kelani Lewis each bucketed seven points, and Anson Lazaro finished with six points in the win.
Kaua‘i’s Ridge Serreon was the high-point man for the Red Raiders with 18 points, followed by Mikey Manera adding 10 points, and Cade Meyers finishing with eight marks.
Josh Rego led the JV Raiders’ win on a dozen points, followed by Camren Holt-Ho coming alive with eight points in the final quarter, and Christian Vito marking his seven points in the first half. The JV Raiders prevailed, 53-36.
Kapa‘a takes a trip to Kaua‘i High Tuesday to face the Raiders, and the Menehune travel to the Wilcox Gymnasium in Puhi to match up against the Voyagers.
The JV games at both sites tip off starting at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity contests starting 20 minutes following the completion of the JV games.
