LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School varsity girls basketball team dropped its final home game Friday night, but will be representing the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation at the 2022 Heide &Cook Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II girls basketball championships on O‘ahu. Those contests will take place at Kalani High School starting Feb. 16, and ending Feb. 19 with the championship game tipping off starting at 5 p.m. at the Neal Blaisdell Center
“I’m already making their travel arrangements,” said Kaua‘i High School Athletic Director Keli‘i Morgado Saturday while monitoring the KIF soccer games at Vidinha Stadium. “Kaua‘i High School, despite the loss to Kapa‘a, 46-29, finishes the season with the best record, and will be participating in the state D2 championships.”
Lady Warrior Olivia Malafu led the scoring explosion with 15 points, followed by Alexie-Ann Yam netting 12 points and Hinali‘i Grance netting a trio of three-balls toward her game-total 11 marks.
In addition to burning the twine on the combined 38 points scoring, the Lady Warriors limited Kaua‘i’s top producer Kate-Lyn Colipano to a mere six points, including one three-ball, and Hema Naka‘ahiki-Young to just five points in the game.
Earlier in the evening, the Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i High junior varsity engaged in a “scrimmage,” with the JV Red Raider ladies putting away a 56-31 win over the JV Lady Warriors behind the long ball.
Chayley Jacobs led the way for the JV Red Raiders with 13 points, including an opening-stanza trey, followed by Kawai Medeiros adding 11 points, including a pair of three-balls. Sashia Badua added 10 points, and Cairee Quinones finished with nine points, including a trey.
Taira Samiano led the JV Lady Warrior scoring on seven points, and Sashia Badua added six marks. Keiana Pia-Salvador finished with five second-half points, including a trey, and Jazlyn Corpus finished with five first-half points, including a three ball.
With the victory, the Lady Warriors take the floor one more time on Monday when Kapa‘a hosts Waimea High School in a rained-out game earlier in the season. The single game tips off at 6:30 p.m. at the Bernice Hundley Gym on the campus of Kapa‘a High School.
