KAPA‘A — A collision involving a pickup truck and a moped at the intersection of Kuhio Highway and ‘Ohi‘a Street resulted in one death Sunday evening, according to the Kaua‘i Police Department.
Andrew Derego of Kapa‘a, the moped operator, died as a result of the crash.
Derego, 59, was heading southbound on Kuhio Highway around 6:40 p.m., crossing the ‘Ohi‘a Street intersection, when his moped was struck by a white Toyota pickup truck operated by a 61-year-old Kapaʿa woman, according to KPD’s preliminary report.
The pickup truck was heading northbound as the driver was attempting to turn left onto ‘Ohi‘a Street.
Derego sustained serious injuries and was transported to Wilcox Medical Center, where he later died.
The driver of the truck did not sustain injuries. KPD reported that speed does not appear to be a factor. Toxicology reports are pending to determine if either operator was under the influence at the time of the crash.
Derego was not wearing a helmet.
The intersection was closed for approximately three hours while KPD’s Traffic Safety Unit conducted an investigation.
This is the second reported traffic fatality this year. Earlier this month, 64-year-old Jeff Sutter of Wailua was found deceased inside an overturned vehicle in the Hanama‘ulu Stream near Hanama‘ulu Beach Park. A subsequent investigation determined that he was attempting to park when his vehicle went into the river.
