Mercedes ‘Metsing’ Valle
Mercedes “Metsing” Valle of Lihu‘e passed away on Dec. 21, 2021, at the age of 92. She was born in Pangasinan, Philippines, on June 19, 1929, and was a housewife.
She was preceded in death by parents Geronimo and Lorenza Gagelonia and husband Graciano Valle.
She is survived by son Arnold Vale.
Friends may visit with the family Thursday, Jan. 20, at 10 a.m. at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary in Koloa. Burial will follow at Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park, Lihu‘e. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks and social distancing are required.

Shigeru Okihara
Shigeru Okihara passed away on Jan. 12, 2022, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital, at the age of 97. He was a heavy equipment mechanic and welder for Kekaha Sugar Company.
He is survived by children Sharan Souza, Steven (Donna) Okihara and Faith Ryder, grandsons Kui and Walton Souza, Tysen (Stacie), Kasey (Aldene) Okihara and Preston (Kristin) Chong, great-grandchildren Salina Manibog, Danielle and Teagan Souza, Katie and Kami Okihara, Hana Hoshino and Clara Chong, sister Michiyo Hori, sister-in-law Sakiko Okihara, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held. The family requests no koden (monetary gifts).
Garden Island Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.
Marcello Pedronan Sr.
Marcello Pedronan Sr., 94, of Hanama‘ulu, passed away Jan. 12, 2022, at Wilcox Medical Center. He was born in Lihu‘e on Dec. 31, 1927, and retired from Lihu‘e Plantation Company as a truck driver.
He was preceded in death by parents Gregorio and Luisa Pedronan and brothers Elpidio and Nicomedes Pedronan.
He is survived by wife Adele Pedronan, son Marcello (Lani) Pedronan Jr., daughter Nancy (Michael) Wong, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, sisters Nieves (Thomas) Soriano, Helen Pedronan and Susan Andrade, brother Flor (Rose) Pedronan, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Feb. 5, at Immaculate Conception Church, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe at 1 p.m. Masks and social distancing are required.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Peter Agonoy Batangan
Peter Agonoy Batangan, 79, of Lihu‘e, passed away on Dec. 18, 2021. He was born in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, on Jan. 31, 1942. He was a retired crew chief supervisor, power plant operations, at Lihu‘e Plantation Co.
He was preceded in death by parents Rafael Villa and Maria Magdalena Agonoy Batangan, and grandson Anthony Ka‘eo Tomacder.
He is survived by wife Helen Lisue Bernades Batangan, son Brandon-Chad Batangan, daughters Annette (Danny) Visitacion, Melanie (Thomas) Goldie, Theresa (Esmer) Erese-Tomacder, Lynna-Marie Batangan and Brenda-Sue (Jill) Batangan, 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
