WAIMEA — Menehune Road in the vicinity of the Waimea Swinging Bridge remains closed following a rockfall Tuesday morning.
Following the rockfall mitigation assessment done Thursday, the county announced that mitigation work will start Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily announced the county.
“Contractors estimate that it may take at least three weeks to remove all the rockfall hazards above Menehune Road,” said Mayor Derek Kawakami. “Road crews will resume clearing work as soon as it is deemed safe.”
There is no timeline on when Menehune Road will be re-opened. Updates will be provided as information becomes available, the county said.
“We are thankful to our utility partners for restoring power and water service by Tuesday night,” Kawakami said. “Our telecommunications partners are continuing their work to restore cable and Internet service. That work is estimated to be completed, Friday. Any resident needing assistance during the continued road closure is urged to call the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency for assistance at 808-241-1800.”
The Department of Public Works will also address the damaged swinging bridge supports that are located above Menehune Road.
Affected residents are urged to avoid the dangerous conditions.
If anyone requires assistance during work hours, they may call the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency at 808-241-1800. If they need assistance after work hours, call Kaua‘i Police Dispatch at 808-241-1711. Call 911 if this is an emergency and requires immediate assistance.
