Kaua‘i Community Players ‘All My Sons’ opens Friday

PUHI — Tickets for the Kaua‘i Community Players’ “All My Sons” production are on sale through the KCP website, kauaicommunityplayers.org, for the presentation that opens starting Friday at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse.

“All My Sons” will stage Thursdays through Saturdays through Jan. 23 starting at 7 p.m., with the Sunday matinee at 4 p.m.

KCP board member Capt. Rod Green said there will be a dress rehearsal Thursday at 7 p.m. that is a “pay-what-you-can” performance for the public.

Performances are open with limited seating available due to COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, and face masks are required for all attending.

“All My Sons” is an American classic that follows a family and community a few years following a disastrous event that took place during World War II, states information from the KCP promotional flyer.

“The father, Joe Keller, owns a factory that manufactures plane parts,” said Bailey Hutton, KCP president, in an email. “During the war, they are contracted by the American government to manufacture for the military. Following a bad batch of cylinders being sent out, a number of American pilots lose their lives.”

“While the families of these soldiers are affected, so are the family and the community as they deal with the scandal,” Hutton said. “The family also suffers a personal loss — one of their sons never returned from the war.”

The play explores the effects of a father’s decisions and just how many people they end up affecting. It begs the question of “Does the ends justify the means?”

“The play is set a couple of years following the end of the war, and explores the study of denial, guilt and social responsibility,” Hutton said.

The KCP production is based on a play that is a winner of the Tony Award for best author and The New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play.
