LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Bus will have a new and improved design for its 2022 monthly bus passes starting Jan. 1.
The new passes will have a different color each month, and will contain a QR code to link riders to The Kaua‘i Bus website, thekauaibus.com, where riders can get live tracking information on bus-arrival times. General passes will have a horizontal design, while discount passes will be vertical.
The county Transportation Agency initiated the change after receiving employee and customer input that the current “scratch-off” option could be accidentally scratched off, making it void for use before the official expiration date.
Drivers also indicated that there was not enough distinction between the general and discount pass designs, making it difficult for them to check each customer pass without holding up the route for too long.
Prices for bus passes will remain the same, with one-day passes costing $5, monthly passes are $50 and annual passes $550. Half-price are available for seniors 65 and over, youth 7 to 18, and qualified discount-card holders when showing proper identification.
Monthly and one-day bus passes continue to be available at Menehune Food Mart stores in Kekaha, Kapahi and Kilauea, Aloha Island Mart at the Kapa‘a Shell Gas Station, County of Kaua‘i Finance Department Treasury Division in the Lihu‘e Civic Center Mo‘ikeha Building, The Kaua‘i Bus office near Kaua‘i Police Department headquarters in Lihu‘e, and at all Big Save and Times supermarkets (non-discount passes only).
Annual bus passes and 10-trip paratransit ticket books are only available at The Kaua‘i Bus office in Lihu‘e.
If a customer wants to purchase multiple months’ worth of passes at a time, they will only be able to do so at the Transportation Agency’s office or at the county Department of Finance.
Current, unused, scratch-off passes are valid through Dec. 31, and are non-refundable.
