Kudos to Hank Zevaat for making all those kadomatsu, or New Year’s decorations, for the Pau Hana Market (Wow! Kaua‘i Churros is back for all those shoppers who came to get their kadomatsu!) at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e.

Janice Bond had some special money to distribute for New Year good luck. Now if we could figure out who has that mochi machine.
Janice said Kaua‘i Police Department Chief Todd Raybuck did a bang-up job with The Salvation Army Red Kettle at the Safeway in the Hokulei Village Shopping Center, and Lions Past District Governor Kelvin Moniz is going to induct a whole mess of new Lions into the Kapa‘a Lions Club.
Mary Bea Porter King and Charlie King were picking up their supplies for the New Year weekend, and Nel Melchor-Asuncion said she’s missing not seeing Josie Pablo running around town.
Ed Lanson got a special-order kadomatsu piece and bolstered his purchases with red-ginger bouquets. Wirat Farms had not only the watermelon radish, they added purple daikon. The inside is as purple as the outside, unlike the watermelon radish that has a tinge of pink showing but is pink on the inside. Now, how do you prepare those tall taro plants?
Laurie Ho and Bill Spitz were thrilled to receive the market’s The Garden Island Best Of Kaua‘i plaque for being voted the best farmers’ market by our readers. But, there’re no walls at the Pau Hana Market to hang it.
Frank Cruz and friends came early with the afternoon music for the market.
Now, if you missed getting any of Hank’s kadomatsu, check out the supermarkets — they usually have some in the produce section.
