What is a fire hen?
Barbara Gusman of the Sheraton Kaua‘i Coconut Beach Resort in Waipouli (great job hosting that successful Kaua‘i Made Holly Jolly on Saturday!) said chef Chanel Mitchell is embracing the chicken-based program that is available via DoorDash or pickup (kudos on the Thanksgiving first-responder meals!). Did we get any fire-hen orders during the day-long Holly Jolly?
Mayor Derek Kawakami had his entire ‘ohana in tow as he enjoyed milling with the more than 40 Kaua‘i Made vendors (Annette Hashimoto was thrilled with her new model, Kyri Rita!), including Tyran Schwend and Taylen Taniguchi of Aunty Lilikoi, who were doing double and triple duty because some of the vendors were double- and triple-booked for the day.
Kudos to the Hawai‘i Government Employees Association on hosting the holiday bake sale (yes, those banana muffins were the bomb!) to raise funds for the Charles Kendall Scholarship. No Becky Komaki malasadas since she cranked them out last week at the West Kaua‘i Methodist Church bazaar, but great entertainment with Russell Wellington and Kahalau Leoki. We got Kimberly Hope and guest today at the Pau Hana Market at Kukui Grove Center.
And, the “Grandma Mamas” (that’s a Bridget Arume — helping at the Hapa tent — term!” were out at the Downtown Lihu‘e Night Market, where Krystl Apeles got to open the Alakoko store to some of the vendors, including Mo‘olelo Murals artists Bethany Coma and Holly Ka‘iakapu (when is the class at Japanese Grandma’s Kitchen?).
With that much activity, it’s no wonder Hamura Saimin (can you still see me, state Department of Health vaccine clinic?) and Kaua‘i Churros were pretty much sold out. How many Flying Saucers?
