LIHU‘E — Bad weather conditions impacted the finish of the Honolulu Marathon Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Cross Country Championships that unfolded under the mist and fog Saturday at the Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy on Hawai‘i Island.
“They’re running in fog,” said Sam Pratt, father of Island School runner Bradley Pratt, after receiving a smartphone video of the boys’ race start.
The Island School boys team, representing the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation as division champions, finished the grueling upland race in fifth place in Division II with 102 points being collected by its runners, including Kai Spindt, Ryan Stevens, Christian Carrington, Avinash Srikanth and Spencer Summerhays.
The Division II was taken by Hawai‘i Baptist runners, who finished with 52 points, just five points ahead of second-place finishers Hanalani. Seabury Hall boys filled in third place with 64 points, just three points ahead of host HPA, which ended with 67 points.
Punahou boys were solid Division I winners with 46 points after placing four of its five scoring runners finished in the Top 10.
Kaua‘i High School’s team, including Emma Burgess, Kamaira Silva, Coral Turner, Jeanine Longboy and Riley Carl, finished Division II racing in fifth place with 119 points, just a point short of the fourth-place Kihei Charter School’s 118 points.
The Punahou girls were a solid first place in Division I with 26 points after five of its scoring runners finished in the Top 10. The ‘Iolani girls finished second with 119 points, just four points ahead of third placing finishing Milillani.
Individually, Kaua‘i’s top male runner, Brennen Corregedore, finished in the medal count at No. 13 overall on a run of 19 minutes, 54.73 seconds in the race where the top finisher, Kared Kaimana of Maui High, set the pace for the field at 18:48.26. Island School’s top-scoring runner Kai Spindt finished 44th overall on a 21:16.28 run.
Burgess, the KIF top female runner as well as part of the Kaua‘i High girls’ team scoring, finished the state run 19th overall on a slowed 24:32.08 run on the muddy HPA course. The Kaua‘i High’s solid No. 2 runner Kamaira Silva ended the state race in 64th, overall on a 27:13.03 run in the race where Punahou’s Izzy Ford set the pace with her first finish, stopping the clocks at 21:24.07.
