Vivian, 89, lives alone, and suffers from Alzheimer’s, but her family and caregivers check in on her daily.
Her kind-hearted and genuine demeanor is contagious, and she is a joy to be around, sharing her beautiful voice through songs. Vivian has an upbeat personality and great sense of humor with both peers and staff, and is always encouraging others through inspirational quotes.
Unfortunately, her limited fixed income barely covers living expenses, food and medications. As the cold winter season approaches, it would be extremely beneficial for Vivian to have access to warm clothing, a suitable jacket, covered shoes and toiletries. It would bring great joy and appreciation to Vivian if she received these special gifts of aloha.
Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island is sharing daily, front-page stories about families and individuals (we don’t use their real names) facing challenges, and who would appreciate a little help.
The Christmas Fund is an avenue for everyone to provide that assistance. Donations are used by Zonta Club members to purchase gift certificates that are in turn distributed to families and individuals through social-service agencies.
Each donation is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrative costs involved, and money goes directly to provide for those in need of Christmas presents and groceries.

w Lena is wheelchair-bound and visually impaired, and her speech has become less and less clear through the years. However, her zest for life at the age of 26 keeps everyone on their toes.
Lena wants to return to daily activities and eagerly waits for the pandemic to be over, as she’s not able to see her peers because she’s in a high-risk category. Her single mom works 10-hour days and travels for an hour each way, and leaves her in the care of others most of the day.
She likes pretty things, and enjoys arts and crafts and playing games. The one thing that brings Lena great joy is sharing. If she could have an arts and crafts kit to make beaded jewelry and bracelets, she’d be over the top with joy. Lena’s mom struggles to keep healthy food on the table, so holiday treats would be nice.
w Aneta is a young woman who has an intellectual disability who lives with her single mother and requires assistance with hygiene, cooking meals and going out into the community. Anela loves going to the dog park, browsing in Ross and playing sports. Aneta would enjoy a new basketball or gift card to Ross.
