LIHU‘E — Host Kaua‘i High School split its series against Kapa‘a High School Saturday during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air-riflery matches contested at the school’s new rifle range that was constructed by almnus Kaylen Konishi during the COVID-19 sports layoff.
The host Red Raiders took the boys’ competition when its five scoring marksmen totaled 1,238 points. Kapa‘a did not field any shooters for the event.
On the girls’ range, Kapa‘a High School girls out-pointed Kaua‘i, 1,082 points to the Raiders’ 912 points when the Warriors fielded five shooters and Kaua‘i had its points accumulated by four sharpshooters.
Red Raider Vincent Javinar copped high-point honors for the boys with a 256-point total, followed by Sherwin Inigo Maduro totaling 250 points.
Kapa‘a’s Rayven Raza topped the girls’ scoring on a 248, just five points better than Kaua‘i’s Kailee Oyama, who finished with a 243.
No results were available from the Island School at Waimea matches.
Saturday marked the final match on the KIF calendar.
The next air-riflery event is the 2021 Civilian Marksmanship Program Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championships scheduled to contest Dec. 7 at the Blaisdell Center on O‘ahu.
The KIF is eligible to send five boys and five girls qualifiers to the event.
