NAWAILIWILI — The future USS Daniel Inouye (DDG 118) is set to arrive at is new homeport, Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickman on Thursday, but first, it’ll travel around the Hawaiian Islands.
The new Arleigh Burke-class destroyer is scheduled to pass Nawiliwili Harbor at 8 a.m. today, before being commissioned on Dec. 8, one day after the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Commemoration.
The ship is named in honor of Daniel Inouye, who served as a U.S. Senator for Hawai‘i from 1963 until his death in 2012. A Medal of Honor recipient for his heroism in the U.S. Army, Inouye served as a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in Italy during World War II.
The “Honoring the Islands” tour will allow residents to see the U.S. Navy’s newest ship as it transits to O‘ahu and pays tribute to the memory and legacy of Sen. Inouye.
The USS Daniel Inouye reports to Commander, Destroyer Squadron 31, which is responsible for direct oversight of the training, maintenance and readiness of multiple surface combatants.
