WAIMEA — Island School and Waimea High School each took both ends of their matches on Friday during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation second round of girls volleyball.
The Voyager Junior Varsity opened by splitting its opening pair of sets against the Kapa‘a JV, 25-22, 22-25 before settling down to take the series, 25-17.
On the varsity court at the Bernice Hundley Gym at the Kapa‘a High School campus, the Island School varsity stayed ahead of the Lady Warriors, 25-20, 25-21, and came back against Kapa‘a, 28-26.
Waimea High School hosted the Kaua‘i Red Raiders at the Clem Gomes Gym where the JV squad took two sets to Kaua‘i High School, 25-9, 25-18, and dropping its third set, 17-25.
On the varsity court where Waimea was without the presence of its coach Brandi Hori Moises, and Kaua‘i senior Nahe Bukoski was suited up, but not cleared to participate, the Menehune laid claim to the series, 25-7, 25-12, and 25-7.
Waimea, holder of the KIF first round title, used the depth of its weaponry to disassemble the Raiders’ mental game, limiting the Lady Red Raiders to single-digit scoring in two of its three sets.
Facing a 23-6 deficit in the second set, the Lady Red Raiders sparked a rally when Keira Caoagas smacked the ball, and libero Jaclyn Oshiro blocked a Menehune ball in the string of points served up by Kili Estrella.
But, the Red Raiders could not sustain the rally, and Waimea put away the contest on a Kaua‘i passing error.
The KIF girls volleyball teams next take the courts on Tuesday when Kaua‘i High School hosts Kapa‘a at the Kaua‘i High School gym, and Waimea travels to the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus.
The JV games serve up starting at 5 p.m. at both sites with the varsity contests starting 25 minutes following the completion of the JV games.
