LIHU‘E — King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School principal Jason Yoshida said the school uses hand sanitizers everyday.
“We use these refills in the handwashing stations around the campus,” Yoshida said. “We use it daily.”
Yoshida expressed the school’s gratitude to the East Kaua‘i Lions Club for its donation of three cases of hand sanitizer refills produced by the Koloa Rum Company on Friday.
The organization also delivered five cases of hand sanitizer to the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School.
“We have a lot of students,” said Wilcox School principal Corey Nakamura. “We use the sanitizers in the handwashing stations around the school. This delivery should keep us going for about a month.”
During the one-week period ending Nov. 11, Kaua‘i schools placed three schools in the top nine positions listed in the COVID-19 Case Count by the Department of Education.
Topping the list that counted 88 positive tests statewide, Kaua‘i High School tied with Hilo High School with each school reporting five incidents. King Kaumuali‘i and Wilcox School each reporting three cases along with Moanalua High School on O‘ahu.
According to the state Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to other people.
If clean, running water is not accessible, use soap and available water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean hands.
The Kaua‘i-based Koloa Rum Company expanded to produce hand sanitizers during the COVID-19 pandemic in answer to the needs of the island’s first responders and healthcare organizations.
After working with the regulatory agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, the National Drug Codes, and the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, Koloa Rum company secured the necessary approvals needed to produce sanitizers in 1.75 liter and 200 ml plastic bottles with tamper-evident screwcaps.
