KAPA‘A — Kaua‘i High School runner Brennen Corregedore finished the race in first place overall, but the effort fell short as the Island School boys topped the latest Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation cross country races contested at the Kapa‘a High School campus on Saturday.
“I just stayed back of the leaders and ran my own pace,” Corregedore said. “When it was time, I made my move because I knew I could win the race. I have my sprints. Today was my personal best at 17 minutes, 38.27 seconds.”
Island School runner Ryan Stevens, last week’s top finisher in the races held at Island School, dropped to an eighth-place overall finish on a run-stopping the clocks at 19:25.80, down from his home-field 17:49.77 finish. But that finish was pivotal in turning the Voyager boys edge in scoring that ended with Island School boys accumulating 32 points for top team honors in the Kapa‘a races.
Corregedore and the Red Raider boys finished at 41 points for runner-up honors followed by the host Kapa‘a boys in third place with 60 points, and Waimea closing the race at 94 points.
Running under near-ideal morning conditions of clear weather and a hint of wind to keep the runners cool, Corregedor, Cade Meyers, and Kaidyn Yago kept the redshirts in the scoring lead before Stevens’ crossing. The absence of Kaua‘i runners until Samuel Israelson crossed created a point differential that could not be made up.
The girls race proved to be just as competitive in the 18-runner field.
Kaua‘i High School’s Emma Burgess set the pace with a dominating run that broke the 20-minute barrier at 19:23.95, a nearly two-minute improvement from her last week’s race at Island School.
“She can do better,” said Keith Burgess, Emma’s father and a Kaua‘i High School athletic trainer. “She did 17 minutes the last race in Waimea, and we’re going to Waimea next week.”
The performance led by the Kaua‘i High School 11th grader see-sawed throughout and Kaua‘i High School girls ended in a tie with host Kapa‘a High School girls at 32 points apiece.
The tie-breaker came down to Kapa‘a’s sixth runner, Addi Jensen crossing the line 16th overall at 31:19.22, and the Kaua‘i runner Lauryn Hashimoto crossing 17th overall on a 34:28.51 run.
The next KIF cross country meet takes place on Saturday at the Waimea High School campus with the first race starting at 7:30 a.m.
