LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School air rifle teams swept its series over the Waimea Menehune on Saturday during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air riflery matches that were contested at the new facility at Kaua‘i High School, and the Island School outdoor range.
At the Island School range, the Kapa‘a boys failed to field a team, and the Kapa‘a girls fielded four girls to compete against four girls from Island School who bested the Kapa‘a wahine sharpshooters, 793-683.
“It was a beautiful day to shoot an air rifle match,” said Island School coach Sean Magoun. “It was nice having Kapa‘a join Island School at our range to shoot a match. Kapa‘a was represented by four Lady Warriors competing against Island School’s four-lady Voyager team. Our Voyager high point shooter was Dominica De Trolio with 222 points, and the Lady Warriors had Ella Anderson finishing with a 232.”
Led by Red Raider Logan Lagazo who posted the top girls’ score of the day, the Kaua‘i girls outpointed the Menehune by just 40 points, 1053-1013 after Logan posted scores of 87 in the prone position, 62 in the standing, and 85 in the kneeling position for a 234 total.
Kyler Konishi (89-69-81) and Jordan Andres (85-66-88) each marked 239 points to lead the Kaua‘i boys to surge past the Waimea boys, 1165-1042.
Top marksman for the boys belonged to Braden Viohl of Island School who finished with a day’s high 246 points, including posting a 94-point showing in the prone position, just six points shy of perfect.
“The Island School boys air rifle team did not have any Kapa‘a shooters to compete with and had to compete amongst themselves for top honors,” Magoun said. “Senior shooter Braden Viohl had high point shooter honors today with a 246. He was followed by classmate Joshua Dobashi with a 237, then by Cody Manibog with a 232. Freshman Gabriel Kelly was fourth with a personal best of 227. The fifth scoring member was JJ Louis with a 204. The team was pleased with their overall score of 1146.”
Lagazo finished with 234 points to lead the wahine sharpshooters, challenged by first-timer Ella Anderson of Kapa‘a ending the day just two points behind Lagazo.
The next KIF air rifle matches take place Saturday when Kaua‘i visits Kapa‘a at the Bernice Hundley Gym, and Waimea comes over to shoot against the Voyagers at the Island School outdoor range. Start time is 10 a.m. at both sites.
