LIHU‘E — The state Department of Education reported 525 COVID-19 cases between Aug. 27 and Sept. 2. Twenty-seven of those cases were on Kaua‘i.
Nine of the total cases were reported at Kapa‘a Elementary. This brings that school’s total case count to 18, the highest total in any public school on Kaua‘i.
Principal Jason Kuloloia could not be reached for comment on Friday.
Kapa‘a High reported four cases, and Hanalei, Kalaheo, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle, Kapa‘a Middle, Kaua‘i High and both Ni‘ihau high school and elementary each reported two cases. King Kaumuali‘i Elementary and Waimea High both reported one new case.
This brings the total reported cases at Waimea High to four, according to the DOE website. However, a notice sent home to parents on Sept. 1 stated that Waimea High has had five COVID cases this year. The DOE has not responded to The Garden Island’s request for clarification.
This most recent case count brings Kaua’i’s total number of students and staff infected with COVID-19 since July 8 to 82.
