There’s an old saying: “Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but not to their own facts.”
In today’s misinformation epidemic, It’s never been more important to get the right information out about the COVID vaccine.
So I was surprised to see the recent letter by Ms. Pennington in the Sunday (Aug. 22) edition of The Garden Island filled with dangerous misinformation.
But the letter, published by your paper and therefore given additional weight, since many readers don’t differentiate between letters, opinion columns or actual news stories, included this false statement that “there’s been over 12,000 deaths so far, and that’s a low estimate from people dying from the vaccine.”
That would be horrifying if true. It is absolutely not. She also said at least one-third have had an adverse reaction. What does that mean? You can call the momentary pain from the tiny needle an “adverse reaction.” Here are some actual facts from the Center for Disease Control, based on real data gathered daily:
1) As of Aug. 26 there have been 651,956 COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. (0.211%);
2) As of Aug. 26 there were 38 million people diagnosed with COVID in the U.S. (11.4%) Many will have serious, long-term — perhaps even lifetime — health problems;
3) Two to five people per million have had an anaphylactic reaction. This is an allergic reaction that is serious but treatable;
4) Reports of death after COVID-19 are rare. FDA requires health-care providers to report any death after COVID-19 vaccines. 363 million doses have been given as of Aug. 23, and during that time 6,968 reports (0.0019%) were received even though it’s unclear whether the vaccine was the cause.
I speak from personal experience. I am a retired nurse anesthetist and, like many other health professionals on island, I volunteered at the Kaua‘i War Memorial, where the staff was administering as many as 800 vaccinations every day. One relatively rare reaction was fainting or dizziness, a nerve-related response due to fear, not to the vaccine, and easily treated by having the person lay flat. Everyone I saw who had this reaction recovered within minutes.
To those spreading anti-vaccine hysteria, I suggest you look at so many of your friends, neighbors and folks you come in contact with who have already gotten the vaccine. Where are all those serious, deadly reactions you’re so worried about? Surely we’d be seeing them on Kaua‘i by now? Pfizer vaccinations are now FDA approved as of Aug. 20. Check the website kauai.gov/vaccine and see how many sites around the island are offering free vaccinations. Do you want to be faced with a virus that could kill you or a vaccine that can protect you?

This yes or no vaccine thing is about ready to get out of hand. It is yet another way to divide people into classes and label them. I personally know 6 people who were in bed for almost a week after they got their shot …..and they felt like it was over for them. I also know a couple dozen people who had corona at least 1 time some 2 and none of em died. The media doesnt necessarily lie but they twist information to sway the thoughts of its readers many times. Our leaders say only way to beat this thing is herd immunity while talking about lockdowns. I was curious…..u mentioned a figure of 11% and said that Many are going to have lasting effects……exactly how much is Many?
My medical information and history is mine to share if I so choose and everybody has that right. in closing I would suggest everyone watch the old black and white episode of Elm Street. it was a Twilight Zone episode. Watch it and think about the direction tthe media is pushing societsociety. we need remember treat each other with respect and individuals.
Aloha
Marsha, thank you for taking the time to write an important essay.
I can’t understand why The Garden Island hasn’t taken a strong stand against all the coronavirus misinformation that is being peddled by self-appointed pundits in its Letters and Opinion columns. In my view a newspaper has an obligation to its readers to ensure, as best they can, that what they are printing is truthful — especially now when so much is at stake with this deadly virus. This is not only unethical, it is potentially dangerous.
Just today I learned of a Texas anti-mask “Freedom Defender” who died of COVID-19. He had refused to be tested and had been encouraging others to not get vaccinated. He had been taking unproven remedies for the virus, including ivermectin, a deworming treatment commonly given to livestock. Ivermectin was being touted as a remedy by some conservative media outlets — most notably, FOX News. But it was hubris, coupled with a healthy dose of willful ignorance, that really did him in.
If Covid was a hoax, you can bet your bottom dollar that the medical insurance companies would be all over it. None of the hoaxers can explain why these companies are just sitting quietly paying out the big bucks for a so-called scam. Covid is for real.
I can second this observation. As a former litigator against insurance companies, rest assured they don’t pay unless they have to, and even then, most of the time you have to force them to pay even on legitimate claims. They certainly wouldn’t pay a penny if Covid was a hoax.
Facts? Haha your funny. Your facts are misinformation. Vaccine every 8 months. No thanks! God made my immune system perfectly. I’ll trust Him and not big pharma and the govt both who lie 99% of the time.
Citing all your “facts”, would help people understand.
Does the vaccine stop spread of COVID?
No.
Does the vaccine slow/mild/even prevent symptoms of COVID?
Yes.
Does getting the vaccine prevent other variants?
No.
Will you be required to get further “vaccines” or booster shots to prevent new variants?
Yes.
Do antibodies from getting COVID help with new variants?
Yes.
Now let’s talk about facts that contribute to these .08%-1.2% COVID deaths.
-Heart disease.
-Obesity.
-Immune deficiency syndrome.
-Compromised immune system due to age.
Let people choose and you will have better outcomes. Rather than posting and backing fear mongering statements pretending that everyone needs a vaccine to be safe or prevent spread.
Seems like if you fall in the category of high-risk, it is a no brainer to get vaccine.
Other than that, it doesn’t seem to help anything other than control. Healthy immune systems seem to be adjusting to variants and building antibodies no?
Choice is something I thought Hawaii would understand before most.
WE ARE THE MOST VACCINATED STATE IN U.S.
Stop the fear. Get outside, exercise, eat healthy, keep your distance, isolate if sick.
TEST ALL TRAVELERS REGARDLESS OF VACCINE. IT STILL SPREADS.
Current Covid deaths in US per day: 1300. 98-99% unvaccinated. Just saying!
Thank you Marsha, for the article and for helping with the vaccine administration.
I’m all for giving space for different viewpoints but easily disprovable misinformation and lies have no place in the community’s newspaper. Some of the dangerous garbage that TGI allows to be published here is disgraceful. I’m vicariously ashamed of this paper’s editors for allowing it.
If you have a comprised immune system in any way or just want to feel safe having the vaccine, I support you getting the vaccine 150%
I hope I am supported for not getting vaccine, since I got through the sickness, twice with no health problems after.
I’d rather face COVID that I have already gotten sick from. And recovered in 24hrs, then faced the variant 1.5 years later, and wasn’t sick at all.
After all, the vaccine does not prevent spreading. Fact.
Thanks for understanding my decision.
I totally support your decision as completely logical and rational. We should not be so divisive and rigid in our way of thinking and trying to coerce or force the decision making of individuals. God Bless you.
Yup,
Interesting. I have never heard of anyone getting the virus twice and recovering in 24 hours. Where were you tested at ?
We can only do what you have taken the time to do, Marsha. The world is upside down it seems here in America and we must answer every falsehood uttered or the outlandish claims slowly become accepted. Mahalo and please get vaccinated.
A virus that has over 99% survival rate vs. a vaccine that was only just been fda approved (on a emergency use card) that has known side effects. And when was anything free?? There is always a reason for giving things away and sadly our health is not something that is profitable unless it’s on the decline!
Everyone should know that mainstream media and big tech have made an agreement with the Biden Administration to NOT report on deaths and negative side effects from the vaccine. There is 1000s of doctors worldwide speaking out on the dangers and deadly side effects of this Covid vaccine.
Cite it or just stop…
Bravo Marsha for taking the time and having the courage to stand up for truth and the facts here – I do not think that free speech should encompass publishing false information which then feeds the conspiracy theories and adds to our rising Covid rates.
Re: Petrina Blakely
Who decides what is false or true? Free speech has to protect all speech, false or true to remain free.
