KAPA‘A — The Kaua‘i Sea Scouts under the leadership of Skipper Larry Richardson is hosting an open house this Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the All Saints Episcopal Church “the red barn,” also known as the All Saints Gym.
Tom Worthen of the Kaua‘i Sea Scouts encourages teens between the ages of 13 to 18 years old, their families and keiki to attend the event to learn more about what the Sea Scout program is, and how youth Scouts benefit by becoming a Sea Scout.
“These kids learn seamanship skills, make new friends, and create memories,” Worthen said. “From how to navigate the ocean to knowing what knots to use to tie off a boat, they are learning valuable skills that extend to beyond seamanship.”
The Kaua‘i Sea Scouts, the only actively cruising crew in the state of Hawai‘i, recently spent 23 days at sea aboard the Sea Scout’s 40-foot trawler, the SS Decisive. The scouts spent two weeks around O‘ahu to do a haul out in record time of two days to scrape and paint.
Skipper Richardson captains the boat and directs the crew that man all of the boat’s positions — from galley cooks to mooring stations to night watch — experiences that provide hands-on lessons in seamanship skills.

Excellent program. They’ve been around for several and even had a partnership with Kauai PD for a few years. Captain Larry is awesome, kids should check it out.
