LIHU‘E — With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommendation endorsing the use of a third dose of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine for immunocompromised individuals, Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s vaccine clinics on Kaua‘i will be offering booster shots at clinics.
The CDC’s endorsement follows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s decision Thursday, Aug. 12, to amend the emergency use authorizations for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. There is no recommendation yet for recipients of the Johnson &Johnson vaccine.
Those who are eligible who would like to get a booster shot immediately can do so at the following Hawai‘i Pacific Health COVID-19 vaccine clinic locations today and this weekend:
w Wilcox Medical Center – Saturday, Aug. 14, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
w Hanalei Neighborhood Center – Saturday, Aug. 14, from noon to 3 p.m.
On Kaua‘i, vaccinations are walk-in only for the clinic dates listed above.
Those who qualify for the booster shot include those with moderate to severely compromised immune systems, such as organ transplant recipients, those undergoing treatment for cancer, or those who are diagnosed with conditions that have caused an equivalent level of weakened immune system. Individuals will not be required to provide proof of a medical condition to get the booster, but will be asked to attest to their condition.
It is preferred that individuals receive the same brand as their previous two doses, but not required. Anyone eligible must have received their second dose at least 28 days prior to receiving a third dose.
The county’s new mobile vaccine van and pop-up clinics are making it convenient to get vaccinated around the island. All of the mobile clinics are now open to everyone age 12 and older. No appointments are necessary.

The mobile van clinics are open from noon to 3 p.m. for walk-in vaccinations. No registration is necessary. The vans offer a choice of the Pfizer (12+) or Johnson &Johnson (18+) vaccines.
Individuals being vaccinated should bring a picture I.D. and an insurance card, if they have one. Insurance is not required: the vaccines are free, and no bill will be sent.
Minors ages 12-17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will need to sign a consent form for the minor being vaccinated. The mobile vaccination van will return to these same locations three weeks later to administer second doses for those who get the Pfizer vaccine.
