Cultured meats could be legacy for Hawai‘i senators
I imagine Senators Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz, like most people, want to leave a legacy of some kind.
They can do this by supporting federal funding for open-access, cultured-meat research.
For those who don’t know, cultured meat is grown from cells, without slaughter.
What better legacy could there be than helping usher in a more-compassionate world?
We kill over a trillion aquatic and land animals every year for food.
This represents so much suffering it’s impossible to comprehend.
Frankly, no human tragedy or injustice comes close.
Cultured meat has the potential to end this violence.
It’s already been granted regulatory approval in Singapore.
Still, major hurdles remain, such as reaching price parity with slaughtered meat and developing whole-cut products, like steak and filets. Public funding for research will help meet these challenges.

Genetically grown. I’ve never heard of this. I’ve heard of foods that are grown locally without pesticide use. But they don’t give the same color. Like green bell peppers. Which to say is grown every where.
And the food substance for cultured meat is from vegetables. But genetically spiked with beef cells and grown. This food texture is similar to beef. Correct?
Not sure I’m quite ready for a burger grown in a petri dish . . . but what the hey, I’m always open to new adventures. As long as it doesn’t come covered with cilantro.
Price parity is going to be essential. In theory if we can’t lower the price of lab grown meet then we need to raise the price of the other stuff until it is equal. But then again I don’t want anything that uses animal products to feed those cultured meat tissues, and we are talking about doing this in labs which is problematic. I still think switching Americans over to insect based proteins is a better solution.
Got a problem? Throw money at it! It’s the mentally ill way of thinking! And don’t forget to give freebies to the non-earners, and take from those evil earners!
So, what problems have you fixed for free?
Many! Swimming in the ocean to cool off, smiling at someone that could use a smile, teaching others to use common sense and rational thought, showing others how to be a respected person that earns, and teaching others to think of the long term effects of their decisions, and many more! Thanks for asking!
None of those really seem to be applicable to the types of problems in the letter. But I’m sure you knew that.
Cultured meat? Sounds bizarre to me.
And who is Jon Hochschartner from Granby, Connecticut? Has this guy got some skin the the game? And why is the sending LTEs to The Garden Island, touting the idea of man-made meat and asking for public funding?
Oh, and Mr. JH, no human tragedy or injustice comes close? Really? You have never heard of war or torture or suicide or murder or rape, or the many other odious activities engaged in by mankind?
Get a grip, and make your argument without resorting to sensationalism.
“Public funding for research will help meet these challenges.”
Ah…there it is! Another greedy dim-wit, lobbying to do things he thinks are great with YOUR money. If you like this garbage faux meat so much Jon, fund it yourself. But STOP sticking your hands into taxpayers’ wallets.

Every day we get a little closer to Soylent Green!
Lab grown meat. Is that coming from Wuhan? Ya, I’ll definitely go for that. Uh-huh.
Great idea, bring it on.
I don’t know about cultured meats, but my wife and I have switched from barbequing regular burgers to exclusively grilling Beyond Burgers and couldn’t be more satisfied. Taste just like the real thing. Pretty much trying to stay away from red meat these days.
MMMMM Good! Soylent Green anyone?
The world would be a vastly better place with cultured meat. The environmental damage from cattle farming/sheep farming etc is astronomic. We’d be able to drastically reduce the need for water and fertilizer-intensive animal feed, get rid of industrial feed lots, slaughter houses and all the needless death and suffering.
