LIHU‘E — Among recent cases of COVID-19, who is vaccinated and who isn’t?
The state’s Department of Health is “actively assembling statewide data on breakthrough cases,” Kaua‘i District Health Officer Dr. Janet Berreman reported Thursday.
“We expect the Hawai‘i-specific data to be released soon, but don’t know the exact date,” Berreman said. “We will provide an update once the data is available.”
Thursday, the county reported 34 new cases of COVID-19 on-island, representative of one visitor and 33 residents.
This brings the total of active cases to 193, with three hospitalized.
Of the 34 cases, 16 are children and 18 are adults.
Five of the cases are related to travel — two interisland and three mainland. The remaining 29 cases are considered community-acquired. Twenty-three of the community-acquired infections are close contacts of previously announced cases or are tied to one of the active clusters. The remaining six community-acquired cases have no known source of infection.
The state DOH Kaua‘i District Health Office continues to investigate the three clusters previously announced, at Tahiti Nui, Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center and an unnamed educational setting.
“We expect to identify more cases from these clusters in the days to come,” said Lauren Guest, KDHO public health preparedness planner.
KCCC has 33 primary and secondary cases thus far among inmates, and one staff member. The state Department of Public Safety reported one new positive inmate test result Thursday. An additional round of testing was performed Thursday, with results to come out Friday.
The department also reported five positive inmates at Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy, Arizona; 24 positives at Maui Community Correctional Center; two at Halawa Correctional Facility; two at O‘ahu Community Correctional Center; and one positive staff result at the Hawai‘i Community Correctional Center on Hawai‘i Island.
