LIHU‘E — Among recent cases of COVID-19, who is vaccinated and who isn’t?
The state’s Department of Health is “actively assembling statewide data on breakthrough cases,” Kaua‘i District Health Officer Dr. Janet Berreman reported Thursday.
“We expect the Hawai‘i-specific data to be released soon, but don’t know the exact date,” Berreman said. “We will provide an update once the data is available.”
Thursday, the county reported 34 new cases of COVID-19 on-island, representative of one visitor and 33 residents.
This brings the total of active cases to 193, with three hospitalized.
Of the 34 cases, 16 are children and 18 are adults.
Five of the cases are related to travel — two interisland and three mainland. The remaining 29 cases are considered community-acquired. Twenty-three of the community-acquired infections are close contacts of previously announced cases or are tied to one of the active clusters. The remaining six community-acquired cases have no known source of infection.
The state DOH Kaua‘i District Health Office continues to investigate the three clusters previously announced, at Tahiti Nui, Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center and an unnamed educational setting.
“We expect to identify more cases from these clusters in the days to come,” said Lauren Guest, KDHO public health preparedness planner.
KCCC has 33 primary and secondary cases thus far among inmates, and one staff member. The state Department of Public Safety reported one new positive inmate test result Thursday. An additional round of testing was performed Thursday, with results to come out Friday.
The department also reported five positive inmates at Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy, Arizona; 24 positives at Maui Community Correctional Center; two at Halawa Correctional Facility; two at O‘ahu Community Correctional Center; and one positive staff result at the Hawai‘i Community Correctional Center on Hawai‘i Island.

Is this the youth baseball team that came back from Maui? Inter island travel.
10 day quarantine.
All the scientists knew breakthrough cases will occur. The important numbers are how many vaccinated people end up severely ill at the hospital or die, not just with Covid. Most vaccinated people experience mild or no symptoms. Using breakthrough cases to scare people is a type of misinformation.
Any time you have 1980s figures of 7.1% of the votes Kaua’i’s numbers running the county, you have misinformation. Athletics I mean.
Wow! 34 new cases! It seems like every day so many people are getting Covid 19! OH NOOO….! I’m about ready to cry!
Uhh..by the way, how many have died? All of them, some of them? WHAT?! NONE OF THEM!!!! Congratulations to all those who didn’t die (all of you)! You’re now much more immune to getting Covid gong forward than everybody on earth who took the 6 months of minimal protection Guinea Pig shots! I’ve never known a vaccine that didn’t give years, decades, or life time immunity from the disease? Is the RNA every 6 month, or year, jab cocktail really a “vaccine”? Hmmm…..yawn. NOPE
@nothings free. FYI – Oh, please don’t just take my (and every scientist’s) word for it, go ask your physician (if you have one) whether he/she thinks people should get the COVID vaccine. Unless of course, ALL of the physicians across the world are actually “in” on your nonsensical conspiracy theories 👻
50 new cases according to the Honolulu Star Advertiser. Who’s paying the Kauai DOH to shave those numbers down?
The best place to get covid numbers is Kauai gov/covid-19, next The Garden Island worst the advertiser
jake,
Nobody is shaving anything down. The numbers reported on the news are a 2 day delay. They announced long ago that’s what they’d be doing in order to remain accurate. Kaua’i is the only Island that gets real time numbers that are current for that day. I appreciate that Dr. Berreman, the DOH, and Mayor Kawakami have been doing this since the beginning. All Islands should be offered the same ‘real time’ information.
nothings free,
Very insensitive, and naive comment. Just because someone doesn’t die does not mean they’ve fully recovered! Hundreds are currently hospitalized. Don’t want to get vaccinated, that’s your choice. At least show some respect for those that are battling this virus, and for the families & friends of those who have died.
It IS confusing – but the KDOH updates at 2pm and the Advertiser updates at noon. Because of this, the numbers almost never match anymore. If you track them both an add them up, it does all come out right. Also Advertiser seems to not update fatalities exactly day-to-day.
