HANAPEPE — A conservation group will premiere a short film spotlighting native birds’ plight today.
The five-minute documentary, “The Forest Birds of Kaua‘i: Mosquito Transmitted Diseases,” culminates several years of study, according to Kaua‘i Forest Bird Recovery Project Leader Lisa “Cali” Crampton.
The researcher says mosquito-borne illness is a primary problem for the island’s endangered bird species. Thursday’s online screening will include a discussion of ways to address the issue, as well as the greater role native birds play on Kaua‘i.
“It is really important to understand where these birds fit into our economic system here in Hawai‘i, our cultural background here in Hawai‘i and our environmental system,” she explained. “The birds keep the forest going, and the forests are what keep the islands going.”
“The Forest Birds of Kaua‘i” debuts at noon. It will be followed by presentations and a question-and-answer session with Crampton, a representative of the American Bird Conservancy and a Hawaiian cultural practitioner.
“If people really want to understand what’s going on on their island, or what’s going on in the Hawaiian Islands, generally, this video will help,” Crampton said.

These birds do nothing but inconvenience our lives. They have caused us to drop MILLIONS of dollars on plastic reflectors on power lines, they stopped Friday Night Football, they stopped roadwork at night during certain times of the year so we get inconvenienced by day work by the slow County Workers. I mean…if they can’t adapt to their surroundings and survive on their own, maybe it’s time they became Extinct. JUST SAYIN.
They have just as right to life as you do,remember we are all from the same source
I agree, but if I do something fatally stupid, I die. Period.
