KAPAHI — Puhi Ditch Bridge in Kapahi is closed to all vehicular traffic until further notice due to safety concerns, the county announced.
The bridge closed Thursday.
Puhi Ditch Bridge is located on Kawaihau Road just south of the intersection with Waiakea Road in Kapahi. The load rating for Puhi Ditch Bridge was downgraded to limit traffic to 3.5 tons in September 2020.
“We thank the public for your patience as we close this bridge until further notice to avoid any potential collapse that could occur if continued to be used,” Acting County Engineer Troy Tanigawa said in a release. “Yesterday, an inspection was conducted by the county’s consultant structural engineer, who recommended immediate closure.”
Temporary signs were installed Thursday at the bridge.
All traffic in the upper Kapahi area is being diverted to Kahuna Road. The Akulikuli Bridge #2 on Kahuna Road has a load limit of 3.5 tons.

Report on the rest of the unsafe and condemned bridges, buildings and vehicles on the road not in compliance would be interesting….. also newsworthy for the uninformed folks who ignore the fact that Wailua bridge and all the others on island is considered dangerous and should be closed immediately….
