WAILUA — A new high of nine “ace makers” emerged from the field of 34 disc golfers who were doused by a passing squall Sunday during the Ace Run set up at the nine-hole disc golf course at Lydgate Park.
“I want to get more,” said David Greenberg, who rattled the chains for the first ace of the day after the shotgun start. The excitement was signalled by the chain clank followed by a rousing cheer from the group that said Greenberg had also carded an ace at the Makai Golf Club earlier in the week.
Ryan Jacobsmeyer, also carding an ace in the group of nine, served as the tournament director for the play that started across the nine holes set up at the Lydgate Park through the efforts of Disc Golf Kaua‘i ‘Ohana.
“We have 34 golfers all waiting to have fun,” Jacobsmeyer said. “The idea is to have fun. We shorten the course to where each golfer has two shots to try and hit the ace spot. There is no other play on the hole. You just get two shots at each ace spot. Ace makers share in the pot.”
Disc golfers follow basically the same rules as traditional golf.
Ace makers from Sunday include Jacobsmeyer, John Pennell, Greenberg, Scott Herbon, Garrett Ward, Dustin Stoner, Nancy Kea, Chris Cole and Axel Menezes.
“This is the most we have had in a single Ace Race so far,” Jacobsmeyer said. “The old record was five, and the last one we had was four.”
Jacobsmeyer said they try to host an Ace Race every two or three weeks.
“We try to do this because the golfers have fun,” Jacobsmeyer said. “We mix the formats between the Ace Run and the traditional golf. We’ll be having the state amateur tournament here too.”
