MAUI — The Kawaihau Community Little League Majors All Stars took another step forward, Friday by coming from behind to edge Pearl City, 2-1 at the Hawai‘i Little League Majors State Tournament being contested at Kalama Park – Dorvin Leis Field on the island of Maui.
Kaikona Davis-Caberto, playing catcher for Kawaihau, had the hot bat by finishing with two hits in three showings in the box.
Those two hits were critical for Kawaihau who fell behind 1-0 after Pearl City marked the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Kawaihau bats connected for six hits in the win.
Kawaihau answered in the second inning with a run of their own, and broke the 1-1 stalemate in the fourth inning, the defense keeping the Pearl City squad at bay from the opening inning.
Kaiten Mundon, credited with allowing Pearl City their only run, allowed one hit, one run, and struck out three batters in his two-inning showing on the mound. He also walked three and had one batter hit by a pitch.
Colten Dela Cruz relieved Mundon for four no-hitter innings and picked up the win in relief after striking out six Pearl City hitters and allowing one walk.
Ian Wicklurd suffered the loss for Pearl City after allowing the two runs and giving up four hits in his three and two-thirds inning tenure. He also struck out three Kawaihau hitters, walked two, and hit one batter.
With the win, Kawaihau next takes the field, Sunday as the state tournament continues on Maui.
A win at this tournament advances to the Little League West Regionals tournament in San Bernardino, California.
