HANAPEPE — Firefighters from the Hanapepe and Kalaheo fire stations responded to a blaze that broke out on the makai side of the Burns Field runway around noon Sunday.
Kaua‘i Police Department officers controlled traffic flow into the Salt Pond Beach Park area and closed off the back road behind the runway to allow firefighers efficiency in conrolling the blaze that was stoked by brisk easterly winds coming off the Kalaheo plateau in the 15-mph range.
Air 1 joined the ground effort with water drops from the ocean, and the blaze was contained by 2 p.m.
The fire burned approximately 15 acres, and there were no injuries nor structual damage reported.
The cause of the blaze is undetermined, and the investigation is ongoing, according to a county spokesperson.
