HANAPEPE — On Saturday, July 3, members of the Kauai Gateball Club celebrated 36 years of play on the island.
Two original members, Daniel Nishiguchi and Itsuo Sakata, still play, and were on hand to cut the anniversary cake.
Gateball is a mallet sport played with wooden balls. Two teams of up to five players each play this highly-strategic game. Each game lasts for 30 minutes, and the KGC plays four games every Wednesday and Saturday morning.
Outdoor play begins around 8:30 a.m. on a field near Hanapepe Stadium. The club follows local pandemic guidelines during practice play.
The KGC has about 30 members, and between 10 and 15 play regularly. New members are welcome.
