LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Police Department recognized Patrol Services Bureau officer Derrick Kelley as Officer of the Month during June’s Police Commission meeting held via teleconference last week.
In May, Kelley was instrumental in his assistance of an Anahola burglary investigation. He was able to help quickly identify and locate the suspects. Several stolen items were recovered and returned to the victims due to his efficiency and keen eye, according to a press release.
“Officer Kelley’s hard work and determination resulted in not only the suspects being taken into custody, but also several items being returned to their rightful owners,” said Jason Overmyer, acting lieutenant.
The suspects arrested were 34-year-old Samson Contrades of Anahola and 32-year-old Kapelawaipuolo Keaweamahi of Anahola, for burglary in the first degree. They were each held at KPD cellblock on $110,500 bail and $110,000 bail, respectively. They were subsequently transferred to the Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center.
“Anyone who has been a victim of a burglary knows how much of a violation it is to have someone rummage through your belongings and take your valuables and sentimental items,” said KPD Chief Todd G. Raybuck.
“Officer Kelley’s motivating factor was to help relieve the victims of this emotional grief. I’m so proud to have police officers like him representing the department, who go the extra mile to create a positive relationship with the community and make a lasting impact.”
