HONOLULU — The state Board of Education appointed Waipahu High School Principal Keith Hayashi as the state Department of Education interim superintendent on Thursday.
Hayashi will start on current Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto’s end date, which is to be determined. He has been the principal at WHS since 2009.
“I believe that the role I would be playing would be both, and when I say ‘both’ I think of in term of governance of working together with the board to ensure that the issues that you raise are met and addressed,” Hayashi said, “and working with educators leaders within our department to create a plan that is strategic that can address your needs.”
Hayashi said he thinks it’s important to continue to reconnect Hawai‘i students with learning and returning students to school campuses to provide the kinds of support to ensure students are successful.
“I believe it is very important to assess where we are, and one of the things that are very important for me to do is to seek out and get a feel of the field at both the school and state level. I learned from very experienced and educated leaders throughout my career, and I know reaching out and getting feedback is very important.”
Hayashi will have a salary of $210,000.
